Facebook is a great platform to build applications that can grow quickly by enhancing the experience of Facebook users. Facebook applications can be closely integrated with the Facebook social network functionality, hence providing users new functionality, but a seamless user experience. We think it makes a lot of sense for a lot of web-apps to start out on Facebook, and here’s why:
1. An existing Social Graph: Any web-app that needs connections between its users to be established should consider being on Facebook. It makes a lot of sense to utilize the connections that people have already built on Facebook with their friends, family and strangers, than to try building it all over again from scratch in a stand-alone web-application.
2. Diverse user demographics: While almost all of the current most successful applications on Facebook have ridden on huge activity of teenagers on Facebook, there is a continuously rising base of users who are post their mid twenties, are college grads, and are not really interested in xMe and SuperPoke. A “useful, engaging and fun app” sure might appeal to them.
3. Freedom to Developers: Facebook allows developers to do pretty much anything inside their applications as long as they do not bother Facebook users who don’t want to use the application. This allows web developers to do just about as much they could have done on an independent web-site, at a place the user frequents often.
  
  The above three factors, combined together, offer a very exciting possibility for anyone launching a web-app today. Your web-app might be of the “serious” kind, and not as much “fun” or “viral” as a FunWall or Compare People, but it would still make a lot of sense to launch it on Facebook. What more, a “serious” application can potentially put the Social Graph to more interesting, beneficial and directly monetizable uses.

Successfully publishing Templatized Feeds on Facebook Written by admin on March 30, 2008

We haven’t found anything with the Facebook Developer’s platform to be as intriguing as Templatized Feeds. Templatized Feeds were released by Facebook with an assurance that Feeds which are properly constructed would also land up in the News Feed of those friends of the user who sent out the feed who haven’t installed the application.

Collaborative trip planning web application

Challenge:

Design, architect and develop a graphically rich, engaging and appealing application for UTV India as a part of their brand promotion exercise for UTV’s popular youth channel Bindass. It should allow users enter a tag line and enter into a contest. The game should be very interesting and visually appealing.

Solution:

It was imperative that the application gels with the brand promotion exercise being carried out by UTV through other channels like Radio Ads, Print Media Ads and Bill-Boards. The overall theme of the brand campaign was to come up with unique and appealing eye-catching lines on the format of “Just Because ……………………. Doesn’t Mean ………………………… For example: Just Because I do party Doesn’t mean I do drugs.

So we thought why not encourage users to come up with their own JBDM’s and make them gather votes from their friends on the JBDMs. The entry that would gather maximum votes (like) in that week would win the contest for the week. Since every contestant would want to gather as much votes (fbLikes) for his/her JBDM he/she would definitely share the tag line with all friends and ask them to vote for it. And every time a user votes on the tagline a facebook feed would get generated. This made the application viral and 118000 unique visits were counted within a matter of 8 week (the period for which the UTV ran the contest). Mention of the application in UTV’s bill-boards and radio Ads didn’t harm either

The application is no longer live as the contest was on for only a matter of 8 weeks. UTV greatly appreciated mobicules’ efforts to make this campaign a success. This is not the first time we worked for UTV and we would like to thank them for their immense faith in Mobicules.

Facebook Game for eBay India

Challenge:

Design, architect and develop a graphically rich real-time, multi-user game for eBay India. It should allow users to virtually purchase items from the eBay India store, and use them to set up their virtual houses on Facebook. The game should be very interesting and visually appealing.

Solution:

Starting from the basic concept, the complete game specifications, detailing all user-flows and graphics were created. A large number of viral features were incorporated into the application to make it interesting. Such features include allowing users to add other users as their neighbors, give gifts to their friends, view their friends houses etc. An engaging points and rewards system was also designed to make the user connect to the game, bring in competitiveness, and make the user come back to the game again and again.

Integration with eBay’s marketplace API was done to show the user a selection of items from the eBay store that the user can buy using virtual currency, and use them to decorate their virtual houses inside the Facebook application. Various avatars and different color options were also developed for the user’s houses in the Facebook application, and users were given options to switch between them.

A large number of administrative tools to study application usage by users, and to track the performance of the hosting infrastructure were also developed and deployed.

A-Game

This is a multiplatform real time audio/video quiz built for namethisbrand.com. This application is currently being deployed across social networks as applications and popular news sites as a pre-roll game in videos to measure brand perception and recognition. This has a real-time multiplayer functionality, and uses the Smart-Fox Socket Server to enable this.

eBay-eDen

Developed for eBay India, this facebook game built in flash allows users to decorate their virtual houses by virtually buying stuff from the live eBay store in India. This incorporates many social features like gifting, adding a friend as a neighbor, and recommending items to friends. The games a many levels, and the user’s privileges increase as she progresses through the game. This is to be released soon with a lot of media fanfare.

UTV Bindaas

The app is an extension of Bindass’ ‘Just Because.. Doesn’t Mean’ campaign (known as JBDM). The objective of the app is to let people write their own JBDM line and have it generated as an image in the same design template as the ad campaign (font, text size, placement of text). Users can also post the JBDM on their facebook wall and gather votes from friends.

MyJobLinx

myJobLinX is built on the premise of connections made simple where one can just browse for jobs, tap into your network, share jobs with friends and get connected with companies – that’s it. SharingO

Sharingo is a social experiment to empower people with the information on cars they own or desire. With features like Car Ratings and Car Polls, it helps you make an informed choice by showing you trusted opinions from your friends. The Car Listings feature helps you sell and buy pre-owned cars within your trusted network. The objective of the application is to create the largest database of cars and help you give car ratings that are the most accurate by leveraging your social network. It is available as a facebook application as well as a stand-alone website

Prayer-O-Gram

A Prayer-O-Gram is simply a virtual gift, an image that emphasizes Prayer. Send a FREE Prayer-O-Gram to honor a loved one or friend or as a tribute or memorial. Choose a Prayer-O-Gram as a Birth or Wedding Announcement, Get Well Wish, or a Prayer Request or Praise! Send a Prayer-O-Gram to honor your pastoral staff or wish a loved one a Happy Birthday. The opportunities are endless and EASY!

Float Your Vote

This is a pure consumer Internet application around opinions, issues and polls. This facebook application built in PHP framework allows people to start campaigns, vote on the issues and in this way spread the word. Political parties have special login to post party views on the issue.

Baseball Legends

The application lets you own the franchise, create a basketball team with your friends, challenge other teams, improve your player skills, and move up your rankings in the league standings! You can purchase/rent a stadium, do brand promotion to gather fans for your team, arrange professional coach for the team, sell or give away team mercandise, challenge other teams, manage the finances of your team, determine positioning of your players.

CriKafe

Built in Runy-on-Rails technology, this engaging facebook app is a game for cricket enthusiasts. You get live cricket scores, live commentary, stadium to hoot, exciting games and lots of prizes on CriKafe. This application makes watching cricket an interactive experience. One can create chat rooms to discuss match with friends, bet on the batsman and bowlers one believes would score highest runs and get maximum wickets in the match. The choice can be changed in between. The winner walks away with prizes.

My-Type

MyType is an interesting application built around the MBTI personality test with a user-base of 275,000 on Facebook. MyType lets people discover their personality types by taking a simple test, and lets people know what is other peoples. perception about them. It allows users to meet new people and tells them about their personality traits.

PartyBlox

A user can Host New Block Pool on the application and select any of their Facebook friends to invite to access the grid. The host can manually enter text names in blocks to reserve blocks for non-facebook users .Once the last block of the grid is filled by a user, the system would automatically and randomly place the digits 0 through 9 on the X and Y axis of the grid. Once each winner is identified the application notifies all participants through facebook wall posts.

Walk For the Cure

The application allowed users to create a virtual team of walkers out of their friends and walk scenic locations around the world. Users would invite their friends to increase their team size and unlock levels and purchase the necessary equipment while tallying a number of miles walked and watching a tracker of money raised for cancer research that updated daily. Walk For the Cure grew to 125,000 users and raised $20,000 for the Campaign For Cancer Prevention. Walk For The Cure is using sponsorship revenue from advertisers to make donations to The O Campaign for Cancer Prevention.
